It's the bit depth, silly. Even recording in 24-bit you'd still be getting something like 12-13 bits/sample, at -70 to -60 dB, maybe 14 bits/sample moving higher. Or 16 bits/sample. Still not enough. Sounds hollow. Crank the analogue gain all the way up so the peaks are within -1 dB range or even beginning to touch -0.3. Then it'll be better.
